Introduction

It is well realized that cooperative sector can contribute significantly to this process by fostering social and economic justice as well as creating environment for partnership. Therefore, building on the principles of cooperatives, Agri-Business and Trade Promotion Multi-Purpose Cooperative, in short, (ABTRACO) has been founded in August 2000 by a group of professionals with private sector vigor and businessman. Also ABTRACO stands to carry forward the mission of cooperative and envisions promoting agribusiness and trade by channeling available human, financial and institutional resources, skill, capital, technology and improving delivery mechanism into productive venture. This will provide right mix of fuel and lubricants to drive the engine of growth with required acceleration and also contribute to eliminate poverty from the country.

 
Objectives
To increase socio-economic level of members and the rural population, in general, by expanding agribusiness and rural industry thereby supplying quality products to consumers at reasonable prices.
   
To enable members and groups involved in agribusiness in undertaking profitable business by providing skill, knowledge, technology, production inputs and consulting services together with the management of market centers.
   
Identify commodities having comparative advantage in order to promote export trade and expand internal market.
 
Develop and operate infrastructures related to agro-processing , cold storage, in order to boost agriculture production and promote agribusiness.
 
Scope of Services:
ABTRACO is committed in the development of agribusiness and promotion of trade by providing specialized services that people need for their socio-economic upliftment including in the following field:
Policy Research and Strategic Planning
Production and market management of agricultural commodities (Crops, Horticulture and Livestock's) with due focus on high value commodities having export potential.
Agro-processing
Institutional building
Development of Information System for Monitoring and Evaluation of Programs/Projects
 
Organization and Management:
ABTRACO is an autonomous organization based on the principles of cooperatives for providing support and action research services in the field of agri-business, socio-economic development and enhancing delivery mechanism through institutional development and strengthening. An executive committee of seven persons accountable to general body governs ABTRACO.

ABTRACO Organization Structure:
ABTRACO’s Executive committee, under the General Assembly at the top of the organization, provides policy direction and guidance to the management for the effective operation of the programs and projects. It is elected every five years from among the members of the organization. The Chairman heads the management of ABTRACO, and is responsible for making decisions regarding the policies, objectives and strategies of the organization. The Chairman works in co-operation with the Executive Committee guidelines, prioritizes issues and concerns, develops programs and projects accordingly and supervises/monitors their implementation.

Organogram:
Finance and General Administration
The Finance and General Administration Division is in charge of regulating financial and general administration including personnel administration of the organization. The division arranges the timely release of funds to the projects, and supports the field offices/staff with necessary logistics and equipment, as well as supporting the maintenance of accounts and inventory records, and collecting financial reports from the field for consolidation as necessary. The division is responsible for the recruitment of staff and administers this centrally in coordination with Project co-ordinators. There are two units under this division:

Accounts Unit:
This unit is responsible for managing the financial transactions of the organization and maintaining the accounts.

Administration Unit:
This unit is responsible for organizing general and personnel administration, maintaining personal records of the staff and arranging to support the project offices/activities with logistics and material supply.

Research and Development Programs

The Program Division centrally guides and regulates all programs and projects. This division monitors and supervises project activities, finalizes project proposals and reports, liaises with funding partners and other organizations, and works in close co-ordination with field offices/staff, collaborator and other divisions in the Head Office. This division is also responsible for carrying out the programs and activities related to Agriculture, Natural resource Management, Trade and Regulating Social Inclusion Women, Children and Gender Justice. ABTRACO is in a process of creating 'fora' for drawing attention of concerned interest groups, civic society and policy makers about emerging issues and problems related with gender, poverty and advocate for action through public interventions. In fact, in the recent past, it took initiations to establish Farmers' Fora as advocacy platforms on farmers' issues through its three Fora in Biratnagar, Kathmandu and Pokhara in co-ordination and co-operation with the Centre and its collaborating organizations.

Agri Trade and Market Promotion:
Besides these above mention activities ABTRACO will venture into business activities like market development, production and marketing of high value commodities, agro-processing and marketing, including exports. It also aims to provide quality products to consumers, ABTRACO will give its brand name to the products produced under its technical supervision and it will ensure that the quality standards of ABTRACO are maintained.
